Like most of the other projects Techne was started with Handmade Hero as the catalyst. It put me in a mindset that the tools I'm using now don't have to suck and ultimately it's up to us to ensure that they won't. So maybe you're thinking to yourself "why a text editor?". We already have dozens of them, what could another one possibly have to offer? Given that all the most popular editors out there are decades old at this point I believe there's probably some progress to be made. Hopefully less tedium and a greater ability to focus more on the actual code you want to write, less on the editor itself.
